MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – In an exclusive interview on the popular YouTube show “Hoops From the Hills,” Tucker DeVries opened up about his exciting transition to West Virginia University (WVU) and his plans under the new leadership of his father, Darian DeVries, the recently appointed head coach of the Mountaineers.

Tucker, a two-time Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year, sat down with us to share his thoughts on joining the WVU basketball program, the dynamics of the team, and his new experiences in West Virginia. This interview follows the announcement that Tucker would be transferring from Drake University to WVU, bringing his impressive scoring ability to the Mountaineers.

A Family Decision and New Beginnings

Tucker called his dad’s move to WVU “a family decision,” reflecting the close-knit relationship that has defined their journey. “For me to be able to come here for my senior year and to be a part of all of this, I’m really looking forward to it and I’m super excited,” Tucker shared. This enthusiasm is a promising sign for WVU fans eager to see a turnaround from last season’s record-setting 23 losses.

Embracing West Virginia Culture

Tucker is already immersing himself in West Virginia culture. He proudly mentioned learning the iconic song “Country Roads” and even received some pepperoni rolls, the state food of West Virginia, mailed to him. These gestures signify a warm welcome and his willingness to embrace his new home.

The Transfer Portal and New Teammates

The conversation also covered the influx of new talent joining WVU through the transfer portal. One notable addition is Javon Small from Oklahoma State. Tucker spoke highly of Small, indicating that his signing is a significant boost for the team. “Javon is a fantastic player, and I think he’ll fit in perfectly with what we’re trying to build here,” Tucker said.

Overcoming Challenges

Despite a busy and challenging few months, including surgery on his right shoulder for an injury sustained in January, Tucker remains optimistic. “Ready to get healthy and get to work,” he stated, confident in his full recovery by the summer. This determination will be crucial as the team prepares for the physical and competitive nature of Big 12 basketball.

Darian DeVries’ Vision for WVU

Darian DeVries, who turned around the Drake Bulldogs with a 150-55 record over six seasons, is now focused on rebuilding WVU’s program. His approach emphasizes defense, physicality, and toughness—key attributes needed to succeed in the Big 12. “There’s no question that in order to be successful in the Big 12, you have to defend. You have to be able to rebound. You have to have some physicality. Your team has to have some toughness. We will recruit to that. We will coach to that. We will teach that,” Darian DeVries emphasized during his press conference.
