SNIPER in the Making: WVU Eyes Transfer Guard John Buggs III

West Virginia University has 10 scholarship players committed for the 2024-25 season, but the Mountaineers are still looking to strengthen their backcourt. The latest target on their radar is North Texas transfer guard John Buggs III.

Buggs, a 6-foot-3 guard, has attracted interest from several programs, including Drake, East Carolina, ETSU, Memphis, Saint Louis, South Florida, St. John’s, Texas A&M, Tulane, Utah State, UTSA, and West Virginia, among others, as reported by The Portal Scoop.

In the 2023-24 season, Buggs averaged 7.3 points and 2.1 rebounds per game, shooting 44% from the field and an impressive 45% from three-point range, showcasing his sniper-like shooting ability. He delivered standout performances against SMU, LSU, and Florida Atlantic. Hailing from Homer, Louisiana, Buggs has also played at UMass, Hill College (TX), and UTSA during his collegiate career. He has one year of eligibility remaining.

In addition to his sharpshooting skills, Buggs brings a strong pump fake to his game and excels without the ball in his hands, making him a versatile and valuable addition to any team.

WVU has been active in the transfer market, securing seven transfers this offseason: Tucker DeVries (G – Drake), Sencire Harris (G – Illinois), Amani Hansberry (F – Illinois), Toby Okani (F – UIC), Eduardo Andre (C – Fresno State), Javon Small (G – Oklahoma State), and Joseph Yesufu (G – Washington State).

However, the Mountaineers have also seen several departures to the transfer portal, including Josiah Harris (F), Seth Wilson (G), Patrick Suemnick (F), Kerr Kriisa (G), Jeremiah Bembry (G), Kobe Johnson (G), Ali Ragab (C), and Noah Farrakhan (G).

Although the transfer portal entry window closed on May 1, players who entered by that date can continue their recruitment as long as needed. WV Insiders will keep you updated on the latest transfer portal recruiting news for WVU.

Stay tuned to see if John Buggs III, with his exceptional off-ball movement and deadly accuracy, will become the next sniper for the Mountaineers.
