Big 12 vs. SEC: Setting the record STRAIGHT!

A recent debate on social media has brought to light the ongoing argument about the competitiveness and financial status of the Big 12 compared to the SEC. An account named “tide guy” claimed that the Big 12 is vastly inferior to the SEC, citing financial disparity and a lack of competitiveness. He argued, “The Big 12 makes $40 million less than the P2 starting this year! How in the world does that make them equal?? Do they have championships??? Nope!! Do they have big football brands??? Nope.”

Firstly, the notion that conference revenue directly translates to on-field performance is flawed. While financial aspects are important, they do not determine the outcomes of games. The focus should be on what happens on the field, where the real action takes place.

Consider this: if Kansas State played Mississippi State, who would win? What about Kansas State versus Kentucky, Florida, Vanderbilt, or South Carolina? Similarly, matchups involving West Virginia, Oklahoma State, and Kansas should be examined. While the top teams in the SEC are formidable, what about the rest?

In response to these assertions, it is important to highlight that the Big 12 has several competitive teams that can hold their own against mid-to-lower tier SEC teams. Teams like Utah, West Virginia, Arizona, Kansas, Kansas State, UCF, and TCU from the Big 12 can be compared to Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Arkansas, and South Carolina from the SEC.

It is evident that not every SEC team is a powerhouse. The perception that the SEC is untouchable and the Big 12 is irrelevant is a myth. On any given Saturday, teams from the Big 12 can compete with and often beat teams from the SEC.

Moreover, the Big 12 boasts some of the most long-tenured and respected coaches in college football. Coaches like Kyle Whittingham at Utah, Mike Gundy at Oklahoma State, and Gus Malzahn at UCF bring a wealth of experience and stability to their programs. Additionally, the conference is home to rising stars such as Sonny Dykes at TCU and Lance Leipold at Kansas, who are rapidly making a name for themselves.

In summary, the narrative that the Big 12 is inherently inferior to the SEC is flawed. The quality of play, the competitiveness of the teams, and the excitement of the games all suggest that the Big 12 deserves more respect. Football is played on the field, not in the boardrooms.
