Johnson Commits to WVU: A MAJOR Addition to the 2025 Class!

West Virginia has secured a significant addition to their 2025 recruiting class with the commitment of Romando Johnson, a talented edge rusher from Pompano Beach (FL) Monarch. Johnson, standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 250 pounds, made his pledge to the Mountaineers during his exit interview from his official visit, publicly announcing his decision shortly thereafter.

Johnson had a highly competitive recruitment process, choosing West Virginia over offers from numerous prestigious programs, including Akron, Boston College, Cincinnati, Coastal Carolina, Connecticut, East Carolina, Florida, Florida Atlantic, Florida International, Liberty, Louisville, Miami, Mississippi State, Penn State, Pitt, Purdue, Rutgers, Syracuse, Tennessee, Texas A&M, USF, Wake Forest, Western Kentucky, Western Michigan, and Wisconsin.

Before committing to WVU, Johnson visited Rutgers officially and had more visits lined up. However, he decided to shut down his recruitment after committing to the Mountaineers, citing a strong focus on his education and development both on and off the field. “My education is first,” Johnson stated. “I am looking at education, and as a player getting developed on and off the field, building relationships with the coaches, learning technique, and getting better at football.”

Johnson, who received a three-star, 88-rating as the nation’s No. 35 edge rusher from 247Sports, brings a promising skill set to the Mountaineers. He is known for his impressive frame, which could easily support more weight, enhancing his ability to pressure opposing quarterbacks without taking away from his agility. On the field, Johnson shows good bend off the edge and utilizes a very effective rip-through move when pass rushing. However, he needs to add to his pass-rushing repertoire to become a more versatile threat. Fortunately, WVU defensive line coach AJ Jackson is the perfect candidate to help Johnson refine and expand his techniques.

This commitment is a significant win for WVU’s coaching staff and sets a positive tone for the rest of their 2025 recruiting efforts. Johnson’s decision underscores the program’s growing appeal and their ability to attract top talent.
