West Virginia University Extends Athletic Director Wren Baker’s Contract Through 2030

Eighteen months into his role at the helm of West Virginia University’s athletic department, Wren Baker has inked a two-year contract extension that secures his position through December 2030. This move by WVU underscores the institution’s robust approval of Baker’s management and strategic direction since his arrival from the University of North Texas in December 2022.

Baker’s journey to WVU was marked by a series of calculated career advancements starting with a foundational role as a Basketball Operations Assistant at Oklahoma State, where he also earned his master’s degree. His leadership repertoire expanded through various directorships, ranging from overseeing athletics for a public school system to stints at Rogers State and Northwest Missouri State. Baker’s executive acumen was further honed during his roles as Deputy Director of Athletics at Memphis and Missouri, culminating in a transformative tenure as Director of Athletics at North Texas from 2016 to 2022.

The tenure at WVU has been anything but uneventful for Baker. His early days were marked by high-profile coaching changes, especially within the basketball programs. The men’s basketball saga saw Josh Eilert stepping in as interim coach after Bob Huggins’ departure, followed by the hiring of Darian DeVries as the permanent head coach. The women’s program also witnessed significant shifts with Mark Kellogg stepping in after Dawn Plitzuweit’s unexpected departure.

Beyond basketball, Baker’s tenure has seen dynamic changes, including leadership transitions in the volleyball and swimming and diving programs, with Jen Greeny recently taking the reins of the former. These moves are part of a broader narrative of change and adaptation under Baker’s watch.

The decision to extend Baker’s contract reflects more than just administrative satisfaction; it’s an endorsement of his proactive and responsive leadership style, which has been vital in navigating the complex and often turbulent waters of college athletics. Baker’s ability to manage high-stakes situations—from coaching changes to navigating contractual negotiations—has not only stabilized but also invigorated WVU’s athletic programs.

As WVU looks forward, the extension of Baker’s contract is not merely a procedural formality; it’s a strategic decision, signaling a continued commitment to excellence and stability in WVU’s athletic department under Baker’s seasoned leadership.
